Charity Camp - Aloha for Alopecia & Cancer Survivors The WB Surf Camp team is very excited to offer a memorable day of fellowship and fun to individuals and families affected by Alopecia Areata and Cancer. Many people are not familiar with Alopecia Areata and yet it affects more than 4.7 million people in the United States a year. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2012 it is expected that over 1.5 million new cancer diagnosis will arise. Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition that results in hair loss on the scalp and other areas of the body. It usually starts with small patches on the scalp and can progress to complete hair loss throughout the body. To date there is no cure for Alopecia Areata. It is not life threatening but definitely life altering to the people and families affected. WB Surf Camp’s founder, Rick Civelli, was diagnosed with Alopecia Areata when he was 17 and has shaved his head most every day since. "I lost the majority of my head hair in less than a week, so I just shaved my head because as a surfer, I had to get into the ocean to surf. I want to share my passion of surfing and the amazing confidence building and healing powers of the ocean with others affected by Alopecia and bring a smile to their face. If I was not a surfer, I'm not sure how I would have dealt with it", says Rick. The medicinal world has made great strides in the fight against cancer, and WB Surf Camp will continue to bring awareness to our clients and the community through the educational portions of our programs. WB Surf Camp is a strong advocate in teaching prevention of Skin Cancer (i.e. using sunscreen and rashguards.) There are many other forms of cancer and WB Surf Camp would like to honor ALL cancer survivors with a day of surf in the therapeutic ocean. On Saturday, August 11th, 2012 we will be hosting a complimentary surf camp for up to 100 participants at Wrightsville Beach, NC from 7:45am – 1:00 pm. The morning will begin with fellowship, plenty of sunscreen, and our ground surf school. Participants will then hit the beautiful warm ocean with our professional, certified instructors. Our surf sessions will be followed with more fellowship, refreshments and a fun day at the beach. Alopecia Areata and Cancer have “hair loss” in common. Many people undergoing cancer treatment will lose their hair, so not only do they have to battle cancer but they also have to deal with the psychological trauma of losing their hair.
