Firewire Introduces the Hydronaut by Tomo

Hear Timmy Talk about The Hydronaut on The Wire Podcast.
The Stock Hydronaut – built for barrels straight off a surf shop rack.
The Hydronaut – A Brand New Step-Up from Tomo
After three years of development, the Hydronaut is here.It took 36 months to test, refine and modify. And now it’s done.

Built for barrels, designed to go deeper and created for clean exits.

The Hydronaut belongs here.
We’re convined there’s no better single board quiver in wave faces six feet or bigger.

The Hydronaut can crank the best open-faced carve of your year.

It can chase the most wide open barrel of your life.

The Hydronaut is the marriage of Daniel Thomson’s Quad Inside Single Concave and a traditional step-up template; refined in the forward third to eliminate everything unnecessary.

Timmy Reyes with a stock 6’4 Hydronaut at Puerto Escondido.
The Hydronaut scales to work in a variety of sizes for any single surfer.

You can join us on this new episode of The Wire Podcast to hear Timmy Reyes explain why.

You’ll also hear him share stories about riding the Hydronaut in waves sized fun to sized frightening.

He shares much more as well, such as what it’s like to spend his winters in ‘The Northwest’ wearing 6 mil booties and very often driving 1500 miles at a time to surf waves that nearly no one knows about except him.

In this episode he also references the video clips below showing the Hydronaut ridden in every wave you might want to surf it in:

Reef Break Barrels on the Hydronaut.
Beach Break Barrels on the Hydronaut.
Point Break Barrels on the Hydronaut.

Hydronaut designer Daniel ‘Tomo’ Thomson says:

“The first time I had the concept for this board was in Tahiti – I was riding a traditional needle nose pintail that was getting me into the wave fine but in the transition of the wave it just felt like too much board in the front end that could potentially pearl, and it felt too lethargic off the bottom. I knew right away that a nose similar to a Nano (a previous shape by Tomo) would be the ideal nose shape, so I started playing with traditional templates with a nano nose, and they quickly evolved into more of a torpedo nose. Then through a series of refinements with the quad inside single concave, contours and tuning the rocker, the design came alive – the Hydronaut is the best board I’ve ever ridden in waves of consequence.”

Ezra Sitt took a Stock Hydronaut to Nias for the recent run of swell.
The Hydronaut feels fun to surf from V Land to G Land when the wave faces are sized six foot to sixteen foot.

We’ve strengthened it above what you’d expect from our stock LFT build to keep it alive in waves worth traveling to, and it’s ridden by Timmy Reyes, Stu Kennedy, and Daniel Thomson.

This shape excels at the most critical aspect of chasing  big waves – it makes the drop – to quote Kelly Slater’s thoughts on the Hydronaut; “It’s impossible to pearl on.

See below for a list of dimensions available at surf racks everywhere.
